In an inspiring ceremony held on February 10, 2024, at the Bawa Bangla Convention Center in Kolkata, Honorable Dr. Kandeh K. Yumkella was bestowed with the prestigious title of Global Ambassador for Peace by Saint Xavier University, Kolkata, India.
The commendation was announced by the Vice Chancellor, Reverend Dr. John Felix Raj, during the 2024 commencement ceremony, highlighting Dr. Yumkella’s significant contributions to peace and development.
During his visit to Saint Xavier University, Dr. Yumkella engaged in discussions about potential research collaborations, academic exchanges, and skills development initiatives between Indian institutions and the Sierra Leone University system. His focus was on sustainable development, climate resilience, and energy transitions, areas in which Dr. Yumkella has demonstrated extensive expertise and leadership.
Serving as the Chief Guest at the ceremony, Dr. Yumkella enlightened the audience with a compelling speech on “Sustainable Development and Energy Transition,” sharing insights from his vast experience in these critical areas.
Furthermore, Dr. Yumkella took this opportunity to introduce a new book he co-edited titled “Technology and Jobs: Fear or Fear Not,” presenting a copy to the Archbishop of Kolkata. This timely publication, set to be released on Amazon the following week, explores the intricate relationship between technological advancements and employment.
The event was a grand celebration of the achievements of 880 graduating students, attended by their families, friends, and various dignitaries. It also served as a platform to honor Dr. Yumkella’s enduring association with the Jesuit University system, reminiscing about his notable contributions over the years, including delivering the graduation speech at XLRI Business School in Jamshedpur in 2005 and a special lecture at Loyola College in Chennai following his honorary doctorate from the University of Madras in 2007.
