Liu Wei, a Chinese martial arts instructor at the Confucius Institute at the University of Sierra Leone, has introduced nearly 1,000 students to kung fu and Chinese culture since his arrival in the country.
Liu, who hails from Puyang city in central China’s Henan Province, has been passionate about martial arts since childhood, having trained at a specialized school before teaching at Songshan Shaolin Wushu College in Dengfeng.
Inspired by a friend’s experience teaching kung fu in Africa, Liu decided to share his skills in Sierra Leone, where he found students enthusiastic about martial arts, often influenced by movies and TV shows.
To overcome cultural and language barriers, Liu adapted his teaching methods, using demonstrations and movie clips to help students understand the techniques and spirit of kung fu.
Liu’s classes go beyond martial arts techniques, emphasizing the values of self-improvement, virtue, and martial ethics. He also engages students in cultural exchange activities, such as language competitions and traditional Chinese festivals.
Despite the challenges of teaching in hot weather, Liu is committed to helping his students, who have developed a deep appreciation for his guidance.
According to Chen Xuebin, the Chinese director of the Confucius Institute, Liu’s efforts have significantly boosted students’ interest in Chinese martial arts and culture.
Liu hopes to establish a “martial arts bridge” in the future, bringing talented African students to China to explore broader opportunities in martial arts and beyond.
