On July 10, 2024, during a plenary session of the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja, Hon. Abdul Kargbo delivered a speech to H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission.
Hon. Kargbo emphasized the critical importance of fully implementing the “Agreement for National Unity” signed between the Sierra Leonean government and the main opposition, the All Peoples Congress Party.
Hon. Kargbo highlighted that the agreement contains eight resolutions, most of which remain unfulfilled.
He informed the Parliament that opposition supporters continue to be imprisoned or are facing politically motivated court cases.
He urged the ECOWAS Commission to ensure that every aspect of the agreement is honored.
Additionally, Hon. Kargbo called on ECOWAS to safeguard former presidents in member states, citing incidents in Sierra Leone and Liberia where former presidents were barred from accessing official residences.
He stressed that protecting former leaders, who often have significant followings, is crucial for maintaining political stability in the region.
The session concluded with a call for ECOWAS to uphold the terms of the agreement and support the protection of former presidents to promote political stability.
