In a dramatic display of discontent, hundreds of Guineans flooded the streets of Kaloum, Conakry’s administrative heart, on Thursday, condemning what they perceive as governmental malfeasance in the aftermath of December’s catastrophic fuel depot inferno.
The demonstrators, voicing collective frustration, accused authorities of misdirecting aid earmarked for victims and neglecting the welfare of those recuperating in Conakry’s government-run hospitals.
Fatoumata Camara, a vocal participant in the protest, emphasized their unwavering resolve, stating, “We will not cease our actions until the junta-led government fulfills our demands.”
The protest escalated as demonstrators fortified entrances to the city center, impeding normal activities. Some took to cooking meals on the streets, while others resorted to lying down, symbolizing their discontent with the status quo.
Despite the deployment of security forces, efforts to quell the unrest have proven ineffectual, with demonstrators standing firm in their demands for accountability and support for fire victims.
The ongoing protest underscores simmering tensions and dissatisfaction among Guineans, highlighting the urgent need for government intervention to address the grievances and restore public trust.
A very responsible demonstration indeed, no attack on the Security apparatus, no burning of 🚜🚑 vehicles, no burning of government buildings/properties. Well done Patriots of Guinea.
