Freetown, Sierra Leone – February 24, 2026 – In a development that has heightened tensions between neighboring West African nations, Guinean military authorities have accused Sierra Leonean soldiers of unlawfully entering Guinean territory.
According to an official communiqué released by the General Staff of the Guinean Armed Forces on Tuesday, the incident occurred on Sunday, February 22, 2026, in the district of Koudaya, within the Sub-Prefecture of Sandénia in Faranah Prefecture.
The statement details that several dozen armed Sierra Leonean soldiers crossed the border without authorization, advancing approximately 1.4 kilometers into Guinean soil at the coordinates 9°59’04.9″N, 11°11’17.6″W. There, they reportedly set up a tent and hoisted the Sierra Leonean national flag, an act perceived by Guinean officials as a direct challenge to their territorial sovereignty.
Upon receiving alerts about the incursion, Guinean forces responded swiftly, deploying units to the site. The communiqué reports that they confirmed the presence of the Sierra Leonean military personnel, leading to the arrest of 16 individuals. Additionally, the Guinean troops seized the soldiers’ equipment, which has since been handed over to judicial police for further investigation.
Signed by Army Corps General Ibrahima Sory Bangoura, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, the communiqué praises the involved units for their rapid and dutiful response.
It also issues a call to Guinea’s Defense and Security Forces to enhance vigilance and remain on high alert to protect national territorial integrity.
This incident comes amid a history of border disputes between Sierra Leone and Guinea, which share a porous frontier spanning over 800 kilometers. The region, rich in minerals such as diamonds and iron ore, has seen periodic tensions dating back to the Sierra Leonean civil war (1991-2002), when cross-border activities by rebel groups complicated territorial demarcations. Just last year, similar allegations surfaced when Guinean forces were accused of entering a disputed area in Sierra Leone, prompting diplomatic exchanges but no major escalation.
For Sierra Leoneans, particularly those in border communities like Falaba District, this event underscores the fragility of regional relations.
Earlier today, the Government of Sierra Leone has confirmed the border incident in which personnel from the Guinean Armed Forces (GAF) crossed into Sierra Leonean territory and apprehended members of the country’s joint security team. According to a press release from the Ministry of Information and Civic Education dated February 24, 2026, the incursion occurred on Monday, February 23, in the border town of Kalieyereh, located in the Sulima Chiefdom of the Falaba District.
The Ministry noted that the Sierra Leone national flag was hoisted in an area recognized as Sierra Leonean territory.
Residents in affected areas are urged to stay informed and cooperate with authorities as both nations navigate this sensitive issue.
The Guinean communiqué emphasizes a commitment to defending sovereignty, signaling potential for heightened military presence along the shared border.
