Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, has commissioned newly constructed perimeter walls at the Kissy Road and Ascension Town cemeteries, marking a significant step in the city’s efforts to improve cemetery security and preservation.
The commissioning took place on Friday, May 15, with the mayor highlighting the importance of the project in protecting the final resting places of Freetonians.
The initiative, led by the Freetown City Council (FCC), saw the construction of a 126-meter perimeter wall and gate at Ascension Town Cemetery, and a 304-meter wall and gate at Kissy Road Cemetery.
The total cost of the project was approximately NLe1.5 million (Le1.5 billion in old leones), fully financed through FCC’s internally generated revenue.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr credited the successful completion of the project to the continued payment of property rates and business licenses by residents and businesses in the city.
“These efforts demonstrate the tangible impact of civic responsibility and local revenue on community development,” she noted in a statement shared on social media.
