In a heartfelt plea during a live Facebook session, Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, has called for the release of Hawa Hunt, a social media influencer detained since December 22, 2024.
Hunt, a dual citizen of Canada and Sierra Leone, was arrested while participating in the reality TV show “House of Stars” for comments made in a 2023 video criticizing President Julius Maada Bio and the First Lady. She faces charges under the Cybersecurity and Crime Act 2021 for allegedly transmitting “insulting messages” and inciting public disorder.
Dr. Bio emphasized her lack of involvement in Hunt’s arrest or subsequent charges, urging authorities to reconsider the detention and allow Hunt to reunite with her children.
“I am using the first day of the Holy month of Ramadan to plead for her release,” she stated.
Concerns about Hunt’s health have been growing, with reports indicating poor prison conditions, including bedbug infestations and inadequate food. Human rights activists and organizations like Amnesty International have called for her release and a fair trial, expressing apprehension over the legislation used in her prosecution.
The arrest has sparked public debate about freedom of expression in Sierra Leone, with critics arguing that the charges against Hunt may be politically motivated. The government’s use of the Cybersecurity and Crime Act to detain individuals for speaking out has raised concerns about its impact on free speech.
As the situation unfolds, the public awaits further developments regarding Hunt’s legal proceedings and potential release.
