In a ceremony at the Kambia Training Site, the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Conrad Sackey, praised the Peace Corps for its substantial contributions to Sierra Leone’s education sector.
The event marked the swearing-in of four education and two health volunteers, concluding 10 weeks of intensive training.
Minister Sackey described the Peace Corps as a “cornerstone of our nation’s progress,” particularly in areas of education, literacy, STEM, and public health. His remarks underscored the long-standing partnership between Sierra Leone and the Peace Corps, which has played a pivotal role in the country’s development over the past 60 years.
U.S. Ambassador Bryan David Hunt also spoke at the event, emphasizing the deep ties between the U.S. and Sierra Leone.
He highlighted the significant impact of over 3,900 American volunteers who have served in the country since 1962 and reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Sierra Leone’s development.
Peace Corps Country Director Natalie Gill-Mensah expressed gratitude to the Kambia community and homestay families for their warm welcome of the trainees.
She praised the dedication and resilience of the volunteers who are poised to make a lasting impact.
Zainu Deen Sanusi, Director of Multilateral Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, welcomed the return of the Peace Corps after an 11-year hiatus, noting their vital role in shaping Sierra Leone’s future of peace and development.
