The Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) has announced a mandatory upgrade for all electricity consumers to new prepaid meter tokens before October 30, 2024.
This announcement came during a press conference held at EDSA’s headquarters on Siaka Stevens Street.
Starting from August 1, 2024, and continuing until November 24, 2024, consumers must update their meters with new 60-digit electricity tokens, replacing the soon-to-expire 20-digit tokens used by the current Standard Transfer Specification (STS) Edition One (1) meters. Post-October 2024, non-upgraded meters will be incompatible with the new system.
Joe-Lahai Sormana, EDSA’s Director General, highlighted that this upgrade is a global mandate and emphasized its necessity.
He detailed the input process for the new tokens: customers will receive a 60-digit number, segmented every 20 digits, and must enter these in intervals of 15 seconds each. Successful entry will be confirmed by a ’02’ or ‘success’ indicator on the meter. The upgrade is free for all customers.
Deputy Minister of Energy, Eldred Taylor, assured the public of the Ministry’s dedication to uninterrupted service. He noted that Apator and Momas meters are incompatible with the new tokens and must be replaced. Affected customers should visit EDSA offices for replacements.
During the upgrade period, customers can continue purchasing tokens through telecom platforms like Qcell, Orange, and Africell, as well as through aggregators such as Vendtech, Mercy Holdings, and Lynx Solution. EDSA offices will also be available for token purchases.
EDSA urges customers to allocate 10 minutes for the meter upgrade to prevent any disruption in electricity access after October 30, 2024. Customers facing issues during the upgrade can contact EDSA at 672/077672672 or via Facebook at [EDSA Salone](http://www.facebook.com/EDSASalone).
