The Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) has introduced load shedding in parts of Freetown following the discovery of a major technical fault on a key transmission line.
In a statement issued on 16 September 2026, EDSA said the problem was identified along the 225kV line between Yiben and the Bumbuna Substation.
The fault has restricted the flow of power from the Côte d’Ivoire-Liberia-Sierra Leone-Guinea (CLSG) interconnection into the Freetown distribution network.
As a result, available electricity capacity has dropped significantly, particularly during peak demand hours in the Western Area. To keep the system stable, the authority has been forced to carry out controlled load shedding in certain sections of the capital.
EDSA confirmed that its technical teams are collaborating closely with TRANSCO CLSG experts to fix the fault and restore full supply as quickly as possible.
The authority apologised to customers currently dealing with irregular power and assured the public that the situation would be resolved shortly. It also restated its commitment to delivering reliable electricity and promised to provide further updates as work progresses.
