FREETOWN, Sierra Leone — In a landmark visit to Sierra Leone, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for West Africa (DAS), Michael Heath, underscored the imperative of inclusive national dialogue and democratic reforms to fortify Sierra Leone’s democracy.
During his highly anticipated meeting with Dr. Samura Kamara, leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), Heath placed significant emphasis on constructive opposition involvement in national dialogue and the country’s institutions.
He stressed that the rejuvenation of Sierra Leone’s democracy must prevail over partisan interests.
In discussions with Sierra Leone’s Vice President, Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, Heath made it clear that the progress of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact, a crucial U.S. foreign aid initiative, hinges upon substantial democratic and electoral reforms.
He offered unwavering U.S. support for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in preserving constitutional order in Niger.
Heath asserted that stability in the Sahel region is contingent on the restoration of credible democratic governance.
He also met with Sierra Leone’s press corps, highlighting the pivotal role of a free and professional media in a thriving democracy. He emphasized the core principles of free speech, freedom of the press, and the right to peaceful assembly in reinforcing Sierra Leone’s democratic foundations.
During a meeting with Finance Minister Sheku Bangura, Heath reaffirmed the U.S.’s commitment to fostering private-sector-led, broad-based economic growth. He posited that continued economic reforms could attract increased foreign direct investment, ultimately improving the quality of life for all Sierra Leoneans.
Furthermore, in his discussions with the Acting Foreign Minister, Heath expressed his eagerness for a strong partnership with Sierra Leone on the UN Security Council. He underscored the significance of upholding international law, safeguarding sovereignty and territorial integrity, and collaborating to address Russia’s ongoing aggression in Ukraine.
