Freetown, Sierra Leone — January 21, 2025 – The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) has announced the dates for the Paramount Chief Member of Parliament (PCMP) bye-election in Tonkolili District.
The announcement follows a notification from the Clerk of Parliament regarding a vacancy in the district.
The vacancy arose due to the sudden passing of PC Alhaji Masakama Kanamanka III of Kholifa Rowallah Chiefdom on November 8, 2024. The late paramount chief was a sitting member of parliament, representing his chiefdom in the Tonkolili District.
“May his soul rest in perfect peace,” ECSL noted in its statement.
The Commission, in accordance with its mandate under the Constitution of Sierra Leone (1991), the Public Elections Act (2022), and the Paramount Chieftaincy Act (2009), has declared the following key dates:
– Nomination of Candidates: This will take place from Thursday, February 20, to Friday, February 21, 2025, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the District Office located at 5 Boys School Road, Magburaka Town.
– Polling Day: Voting is scheduled for Saturday, April 5, 2025.
The ECSL emphasized its commitment to ensuring a free, fair, and transparent election process.
The bye-election is a crucial step in filling the parliamentary seat left vacant by the late PC Alhaji Masakama Kanamanka III and upholding the representation of the people of Kholifa Rowallah Chiefdom in national governance.
