Freetown – As tensions continue to mount over Sierra Leone’s recent coup trial, a leaked audio has surfaced, revealing a stern warning from Major Patrick Abu Ordende Sesay, alias Major PAO, to political leaders of the All People’s Congress (APC).
The fugitive-turned-detainee, who was recently convicted for his role in the November 26, 2023 coup attempt, urged APC leaders to stand by their cause and avoid seeking electoral justice through the courts.
“If we are all pushing to restore sanity and save the lives of our people, they [APC leaders] should back us up with their actions,” Major PAO said in the recording, which was presented as evidence during his trial before the General Court Martial.
Background of the Coup Attempt
Following President Julius Maada Bio’s re-election on June 24, 2023, an initial attempt to unseat him was foiled on July 29. Security forces arrested 14 military personnel and several civilians linked to the plot, while approximately 30 others went into hiding. A bounty of 20,000 New Leones was placed on each fugitive.
On November 26, 2023, a violent coup attempt left 18 security personnel and two civilians dead. Amid the chaos, detained coup suspects escaped from Freetown’s Pademba Road prison and joined the insurgents. By mid-2024, six key fugitives, including Major PAO, were arrested—one in Sierra Leone and five in Guinea, who were subsequently extradited.
The Trial and Verdict
On October 17, 2024, the six detainees were charged with mutiny, failure to suppress mutiny, and desertion. After nearly five months of legal proceedings, they were found guilty on February 12, 2025, receiving lengthy prison sentences.
Among the key evidence against them was a WhatsApp group known as the Kalamera Security Network, created after Bio’s re-election. The group, consisting of military personnel and civilians, allegedly coordinated plans to overthrow the government.
APC’s Alleged Links and Legal Troubles
Despite audio evidence linking Major PAO and others to APC figures, prosecutors have yet to establish a direct connection between the party’s leadership and the coup. However, Bai Mahmoud Bangura, APC’s National Organizing Secretary, stood trial for treason and other charges but was recently acquitted.
Meanwhile, former President Ernest Bai Koroma remains under investigation for allegedly harboring fugitives linked to the coup. He is currently in Nigeria on medical leave after being granted bail.
More Evidence to Come
The prosecution has hinted at releasing additional audio recordings in which Major PAO and his associates explicitly state they acted on behalf of the APC and Dr. Samura Kamara. As the legal battle unfolds, Sierra Leoneans await further revelations about the coup’s masterminds and their political affiliations.
