Freetown – Sierra Leone’s Parliament on Thursday, 16th July 2026, unanimously passed a landmark resolution reaffirming the nation’s commitment to peace, national reconciliation, and respect for constitutional order.
The resolution comes shortly after the Government discontinued treason charges against former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma. Honourable Members emphasised that while the supremacy of the Constitution and the equal application of the law remain paramount, the office of a former President must be treated with the dignity and respect befitting Sierra Leone’s traditions and national values.
Speaking during the session, lawmakers reflected on the country’s journey from the dark days of civil conflict to the current democratic dispensation.
They cited the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), the Abidjan Peace Accord, and the Lomé Peace Agreement as important frameworks that continue to guide the nation towards sustainable peace through dialogue and unity.
The House also paid tribute to the brave men and women who lost their lives during the unfortunate incidents of 26th November 2023. Honourable Members remembered the gallant officers of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, the Sierra Leone Police, and other citizens who made the ultimate sacrifice. They called for their memory to remain forever etched in the nation’s history.
Key Resolutions Passed
In the resolution, Parliament made the following strong calls:
1. The Honourable House urges the Government to bring forward legislation – whether a Government Bill or a Private Member’s Bill – to safeguard the welfare, dignity, and privileges of former Presidents and former Vice Presidents of the Republic of Sierra Leone.
2. Parliament calls on the Government to establish a comprehensive compensation, welfare, and support programme for the families of all security personnel and public officers who were injured or killed during the events of 26th November 2023, in recognition of their patriotism and sacrifice.
3. All political parties, religious bodies, civil society organisations, traditional authorities, and citizens are urged to continue supporting efforts that promote reconciliation, peaceful coexistence, national unity, and social cohesion.
4. The Clerk of Parliament is to transmit copies of this Resolution to His Excellency the President of the Republic and to all relevant authorities for necessary action.
This latest development is being viewed by many observers as a positive move aimed at fostering national healing, strengthening democratic institutions, and ensuring that Sierra Leone continues on its path of peace and progress.
