The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has intensified its security preparations in support of the Government of Sierra Leone as the country prepares to host the upcoming ECOWAS Summit in Lungi.
As the principal law enforcement agency responsible for maintaining internal security and public order, the SLP has mobilised additional personnel and resources to ensure the safety and security of delegates, dignitaries, residents, and visitors throughout the event.
Addressing the media on Thursday, 16 July 2026, the Inspector-General of Police, William Fayia Sellu, who also serves as Chairman of the West African Police Chiefs Committee (WAPCCO), announced comprehensive security arrangements for the summit. These include increased patrols, enhanced traffic management, access control at key locations, and intelligence-led operations aimed at maintaining public order and ensuring the smooth movement of summit participants and the general public.
In addition to these operational measures, the SLP has strengthened its community engagement and public awareness initiatives.
The Police are urging citizens to cooperate with security personnel and to comply with traffic regulations and security protocols throughout the summit.
The SLP emphasised that public cooperation is essential to creating a safe, peaceful, and welcoming environment for all attendees.
In fulfilment of its constitutional mandate to protect lives and property, the Sierra Leone Police has also deployed a fleet of vehicles and motorcycles to enhance operational readiness and ensure effective policing during the summit.
Through professionalism, vigilance, and close collaboration with other security agencies and stakeholders, the SLP remains committed to demonstrating Sierra Leone’s capacity to successfully host major international events.
Through these comprehensive security measures, the Sierra Leone Police aims not only to ensure a safe and successful ECOWAS Summit but also to reinforce Sierra Leone’s reputation as a peaceful, secure, and reliable destination for regional and international gatherings.
