Ballot counting of Tuesday’s elections in Liberia has started after heavy turnout of voters.
Voting, which closed at 6:00 p.m., got off to a rough start due to a “huge turnout of enthusiastic Liberians to cast their ballots,” Davidetta Browne Lansanah, chairperson of the National Elections Commission, told reporters in Monrovia, the capital.
Heavy rains rendered roads to the affected areas unusable, blocking the timely delivery of elections materials, Lansanah said.
President George Weah is seeking a second six-year term, with the outcome too close to call.
The former world footballer of the year may have to face former Vice President Joseph Boakai, the most popular opposition challenger in a runoff, unless one of them gets more than 50% of the ballots.
The Commission will start releasing results today with the final outcome expected on October 25, according to the agency’s timetable.
