Freetown, Sierra Leone – In an effort to defuse growing tensions between two of Sierra Leone’s most prominent musicians, Kao Denero and Boss LAJ (LAJ), Chief Minister Dr. Moinina David Sengeh has called for unity and dialogue, emphasizing that peace remains the ultimate path forward.
“Entertainment and peace are interlinked,” Dr. Sengeh wrote in a social media post, reflecting on the roles both artists play in the nation’s cultural and social landscape.
“When President Bio appointed Kao as an Entertainment Ambassador in 2022, it was because he understood the value of entertainment to the youth and the people of Sierra Leone. Similarly, LAJ was appointed as a Peace Ambassador in 2023 because the president recognizes the connection between peace, entertainment, and youth,” the Chief Minister explained.
Dr. Sengeh reaffirmed his belief in the artists’ ability to lead by example, urging their fans to choose harmony over conflict.
“I want to call on all fans of these two amazing stars to promote peace, inclusion, and cohesion. If you love LAJ and Kao, your commitment should be to foster peace and harmony—for them, for yourselves as fans, and for our country,” he urged.
A Decade-Long Rivalry
The rivalry between Kao Denero and LAJ, leader of the Red Flag Movement (RFM), has long defined Sierra Leone’s hip-hop scene. Known for their fiery lyrical exchanges and public confrontations, their relationship has often mirrored the competitive spirit of the industry.
In recent years, the two stars found themselves on a new path. President Julius Maada Bio’s administration entrusted Kao with the role of Entertainment Ambassador, tasked with promoting Sierra Leone’s artistic image. LAJ, who received a presidential pardon after a controversial conviction, was surprisingly appointed as a Peace Ambassador—a move aimed at bridging divides among the nation’s youth.
New Tensions Emerge
Despite these efforts, tensions have resurfaced, with rumors circulating about personal disputes. Delvaqyo, who is reportedly in a relationship with LAJ, has been linked to the friction. Fans noted that Kao declined to invite LAJ to a recent concert at Sugar Land Beach, fueling speculation that the rivalry has reignited.
“Kao indirectly accused LAJ of dating his ex-lover,” one fan commented online, interpreting the move as a breach of the fragile peace between the two artists.
A Call for Resolution
In his post, Dr. Sengeh acknowledged these challenges but expressed optimism for reconciliation. “These two brothers and I have a direct link, and I believe in them. Today, we all collectively reaffirmed our commitment to peace, unity, cohesion, and entertainment,” he shared.
As Sierra Leoneans look on, many hope that Kao and LAJ will rise above their differences to champion the values they were appointed to represent—peace, unity, and a vibrant entertainment industry.
