Freetown, Sierra Leone – March 24, 2026 – The Honourable Chief Justice, Komba Kamanda, has directed the immediate release of petty trader Fatmata Kamara, widely known as “Mammy Iye,” after she served one week at the Female Correctional Centre.
The order was issued in accordance with Section 5 of the Summary Review Act, which empowers the Chief Justice to review decisions of Magistrates’ Courts without the need for a formal appeal.
Mammy Iye had been charged with two counts of Public Insult and Provocation, contrary to Sections 2 and 3(1) of the Public Order Act. The charges stemmed from an incident on March 5, 2026, at a welding shop located at New Jersey Junction in Goderich, Freetown, where the complainant, identified as a magistrate, had reportedly gone to purchase food from the trader.
She pleaded guilty to both counts before the York Magistrate’s Court, which subsequently convicted and sentenced her.
Under the Summary Review Act, the Chief Justice holds authority to review and revise rulings of lower courts in appropriate circumstances.
