๐๐ญ๐๐ญ๐ ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐, ๐ ๐ซ๐๐๐ญ๐จ๐ฐ๐ง – President Dr. Julius Maada Bio on Wednesday presided over the oath-taking ceremony of Mr. Osman I. Kanu, Esq., following his appointment as Solicitor-General of the Republic of Sierra Leone.
Speaking at the ceremony, Secretary to the President, Mr. Baba Fortune, referenced section 65(2) of the Constitution of Sierra Leone, 1991 (Act No. 6 of 1991), which empowers the President to appoint the Solicitor-General.
He noted that it had pleased His Excellency the President to appoint Mr. Osman I. Kanu as Solicitor-General and that the oath-taking ceremony fulfilled the constitutional requirement for him to commence his duties.
In his acceptance remarks, Mr. Kanu expressed profound gratitude to President Bio for the confidence and trust reposed in him, describing the appointment as both an honour and a sacred responsibility. He reflected on the significance of the occasion, noting that his appointment coincided with the Day of Arafah and that he was taking the oath on the Day of Ashura, which he described as a powerful reminder of faith, service, and accountability.

The newly appointed Solicitor-General pledged to uphold the rule of law, strengthen democratic governance, and ensure that justice remains accessible to all citizens, particularly the vulnerable.
Drawing on his twenty-two years of legal experience, Mr. Kanu assured the President and the nation that he would dedicate himself fully to strengthening the institution and enhancing the effectiveness of the Attorney Generalโs Office.
In his remarks, President Bio congratulated the newly appointed Solicitor-General and encouraged him to remain steadfast in upholding the rule of law and the principle of justice.
The President noted that the office carries significant responsibilities and expressed confidence in Mr. Kanuโs ability to provide effective leadership and contribute to the continued strengthening of Sierra Leoneโs legal institutions.

Mr. Osman I. Kanu brings over two decades of distinguished service within the Law Officersโ Department. Throughout his career, he has served as State Counsel, Senior State Counsel, Head of the Civil Division, and Director of Public Prosecutions, a position to which he was appointed by President Bio in 2023. He served in that capacity until his appointment as Solicitor-General in June 2026.
His appointment marks another significant step in strengthening Sierra Leoneโs justice sector and reinforcing the Governmentโs commitment to the rule of law, accountability, and effective public service delivery.
