The All Peoples Congress (APC) has announced a fresh postponement of its nationwide constituency elections, citing security and logistical concerns arising from Sierra Leone’s preparations to host the upcoming ECOWAS Summit.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Secretariat, the APC said the elections, originally scheduled for Saturday, 18 July 2026, will now begin on Saturday, 25 July 2026.
According to the party, the decision followed consultations during a high-level meeting held on Monday, 13 July, involving the Office of National Security (ONS), the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC), and the APC leadership.
The APC explained that the ONS advised against conducting the internal elections on the initial date, pointing to the significant security and logistical commitments required ahead of the regional summit.
The party said it accepted the recommendation in the interest of national security and public order, emphasizing that the postponement was made at the request of the ONS rather than on the party’s own initiative.
The National Secretariat acknowledged that the revised schedule would inconvenience delegates, aspirants, party officials, and members who had already completed preparations for the polls. However, it appealed for patience and cooperation, describing the decision as a necessary step to help maintain peace and stability during a period of heightened national activity.
Despite the latest delay, the APC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting peaceful, transparent, free, and credible constituency elections. It also called on members across the country to remain calm, disciplined, and united while awaiting the new polling date.
The postponement comes as Sierra Leone intensifies preparations to host the ECOWAS Summit, a major regional event expected to bring together Heads of State, senior government officials, and diplomats from across West Africa. Security agencies have been strengthening operational plans to ensure the smooth hosting of the summit, with increased attention on public safety, traffic management, and the protection of key installations.
The APC’s constituency elections form part of the party’s ongoing internal democratic process aimed at electing local leadership ahead of future political activities. The exercise has now been rescheduled to commence nationwide on 25 July 2026.
