APC Condemns Arrests of Party Members in Guinea, Calls for International Intervention
In a recent press release, the All People’s Congress (APC) has voiced profound concern over the detention of Mr. Abubakar Boxx Konteh, the APC Organizing Secretary for the North West Region, along with fellow party members in Guinea.
The APC asserts that these arrests, allegedly orchestrated by the SLPP government led by President Maada Bio, highlight a disturbing pattern of stifling opposition dissent.
Since their apprehension on March 23, 2024, Mr. Konteh and other detained APC members have been cut off from communication with their families and legal representatives.
The Sierra Leonean authorities in Guinea have failed to disclose their location or grant access to legal counsel, prompting grave apprehension about their fundamental rights.
The APC denounces these actions as a clear infringement upon democratic norms and political liberties. They view the arrests as a departure from the spirit of the Agreement for National Unity, designed to foster collaboration between Sierra Leone’s ruling and opposition parties.
The party insists on the imperative of safeguarding democratic values and urges the government to desist from such unjustified measures.
Additionally, the APC calls upon the Guinean government to intervene and ensure the safety of Sierra Leonean citizens within its borders, in compliance with both regional and international statutes. Reaffirming its dedication to democracy, freedom, and the rule of law, the party stresses the necessity of authentic dialogue and reconciliation for Sierra Leone’s political stability.
In response to these developments, the APC implores the international community and human rights organizations to take notice and advocate for the preservation of democratic principles, as well as the immediate release of the detained party members.
Despite the obstacles faced, the APC remains steadfast in its commitment to serving the people of Sierra Leone and upholding democratic ideals, vowing not to be deterred by intimidation tactics.
