FREETOWN – Police Constable 9273 Lucinda N. Dick, the female officer who served 23 years in the Sierra Leone Police without a single promotion, has finally been promoted.
Sources at Daru Police Station in Kailahun District have confirmed that Constable Dick, who enlisted on 13th December 2003, has been elevated to the rank of Sub-Inspector – just days after her resignation letter went viral on social media.
In the letter dated 8th October 2026, Dick said she was tired of remaining a Constable for 23 years despite her service to the nation.
“My reasons for resignation are as follows, lack of promotion since I was enlisted into the Sierra Leone Police force on the 13th December 2003. I am now 23 years in service and am still constable,” she wrote, citing provocation from colleagues and pressing family issues.
The letter sparked massive public outcry and sympathy, with many Sierra Leoneans questioning the promotion system in the Police Force.
Police Media Head ASP Mohamed Bobson Senu had earlier questioned the authenticity of the letter and said promotion is not by years of service alone, but by performance and recommendations.
But public pressure mounted, including an appeal from Presidential Aide Tommy Massaquoi, who described her situation as “heartbreaking” and called for her file to be reviewed immediately.
That review now appears to have paid off.
The promotion means Constable Dick jumps three ranks – from Constable to Corporal, Sergeant, and now Sub-Inspector.
Her case has shone a spotlight on the plight of many long-serving rank-and-file officers across the country, especially women posted in hard-to-reach areas like Daru.
Police Headquarters on George Street is yet to issue an official statement, but sources say her resignation which was to take effect on 15th October has now been put on hold.
