Sierra Leone has joined other African countries in a Tripartite Labour Migration Meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, aimed at developing a common African approach to labour migration ahead of the 2026 Doha Dialogue on Labour Migration.
Representing Sierra Leone were the Commissioner of Labour, Mr. Sinneh Bockarie, the Executive Secretary of the Sierra Leone Employers Federation (SLEF), Mr. Albert Ojo Collier, and the Deputy Secretary-General of the Sierra Leone Labour Congress (SLLC), Mr. Edward Y. Kamara.
The meeting, convened by the African Union Commission with support from the International Labour Organization (ILO), took place from 22–23 September 2026 and brought together government representatives, employers’ organizations and workers’ organizations from selected African countries.
The discussions focused on strengthening African coordination on labour migration, with particular attention to fair recruitment, decent work, wage protection, access to justice, skills mobility, social protection and the protection of migrant workers’ rights.
Commissioner Sinneh Bockarie served as Chairman of the focus group on Fair Recruitment, Employment Contracts and Wage Protection. He emphasized the importance of African countries placing the protection of migrant workers’ rights and the promotion of decent work at the centre of labour migration policies and engagements with destination countries.
Mr. Albert Ojo Collier served as Chairman of the Access to Justice focus group, while Mr. Edward Y. Kamara participated in the discussions on behalf of the Sierra Leone Labour Congress.
The Nairobi meeting is expected to contribute to the development of a Common African Tripartite Statement and key recommendations for the upcoming Doha Dialogue on Labour Migration, scheduled for 5–6 October 2026 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The Doha Dialogue will focus on advancing fair and sustainable labour mobility between Africa and the GCC+, with particular emphasis on skills and labour-market pathways; decent work and worker protection; and social protection, health coverage and portability of benefits.
