Freetown – President Julius Maada Bio has summoned an emergency sitting of Parliament to consider and approve a list of key presidential nominees.
The session is scheduled for Thursday, 20 August 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in the Chamber of Parliament at Tower Hill, Freetown. The Office of the Clerk of Parliament confirmed the summons in a public notice issued on 13 August 2026.
The President is exercising his constitutional power under Section 86(1) of the 1991 Constitution, which allows him to call a meeting of Parliament at any time.
The emergency sitting follows the recent announcement by State House of several high-level appointments.
Among those expected to face parliamentary scrutiny are Karefa A. F. Kargbo as Minister of Finance, Mohamed Rahman Swarray as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Umaru Napoleon Koroma as Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security. A number of deputy ministerial positions and other senior public-sector roles are also listed for consideration.
As is standard procedure, the nominees will first appear before the Committee on Appointments and Public Service for interviews under oath. The Committee examines candidates’ experience, track records, tax obligations, asset declarations and plans for office before presenting its report to the full House for debate and approval.
Members of Parliament have been urged to attend the sitting and to arrive on time.
