Freetown, Sierra Leone – 29 April 2026 – Air Sierra Leone has announced the temporary suspension of all flights on its London–Freetown and London–Banjul routes for the entire month of May 2026 after its aircraft provider, Ascend Airways, entered bankruptcy and liquidation proceedings, causing an immediate cessation of operations.
In a press release dated 29 April 2026, the airline expressed regret over the unforeseen development and stated that the collapse of the UK-based wet-lease operator has had a significant impact on its flight schedule. Ascend Airways, which supplied aircraft and crew for these routes, halted operations on 28 April 2026, surrendering its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) amid challenges including high jet fuel prices and broader pressures in the aviation sector linked to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
“In order of prudence, and to ensure the continued safety, reliability, and sustainability of our services, Air Sierra Leone will temporarily suspend all London–Freetown and London–Banjul flights for the month of May while we finalize arrangements with a new aircraft provider and complete all necessary regulatory procedures,” the airline said.
The statement emphasised that affected passengers will receive full refunds or options to rebook on subsequent flights, with a dedicated customer service team providing assistance.
Air Sierra Leone reassured customers that it remains well-funded and is actively negotiating alternative aircraft arrangements with several operators. It aims to resume services as soon as possible after the new aircraft is registered with civil aviation authorities in Sierra Leone, the United Kingdom, and The Gambia.
Group Chief Operating Officer (GCOO) Mr. Sukhjinder Mann commented: “We were equally shocked by the immediate cessation of Ascend Airways’ operations. They have been an excellent business partner, and we had no indication that they were experiencing financial difficulties. That said, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to have a significant impact on the aviation sector, with several airlines announcing closures or reducing their networks and frequencies.”
The press release highlighted Air Sierra Leone’s commitment to its markets and passengers, noting that the airline is dedicated to remaining the carrier of choice between West Africa, Europe, and regional destinations. It expressed thanks to Ascend Airways’ team and hopes for their quick redeployment in the industry.
For further assistance, passengers are advised to contact Air Sierra Leone via email at info@flysierraleone.com or customer care lines: +232 90 838071 or +44 7943 430753. Updates will also be shared through the airline’s official social media channels.
This suspension comes as Air Sierra Leone, which operates direct flights connecting Freetown and Banjul to London Gatwick (among other regional routes), was expanding its network earlier in 2026.
The airline’s headquarters is located at 1st Floor NDB Building, 21/23 Siaka Stevens Street, Freetown, Sierra Leone.
The collapse of Ascend Airways, a specialist wet-lease (ACMI) provider that had operated Boeing 737 MAX aircraft for clients including Air Sierra Leone, TUI Airways, and Oman Air, has sent ripples through the sector. Reports indicate the carrier cited sustained high fuel costs and a challenging market outlook as key factors in its decision to cease operations.
Passengers booked on the affected May flights are encouraged to check the airline’s website (flysierraleone.com) or contact support promptly for rebooking or refund options.
Air Sierra Leone stated its priority is to minimise disruption and restore normal operations swiftly.
