The Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU) of the Sierra Leone Police has conducted a significant destruction of narcotic drugs at its headquarters at Rogbangba Junction, Hastings, as part of ongoing national efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse.
The event, held on Wednesday, 29th April 2026, brought together key stakeholders from across the justice and security sectors, reinforcing the importance of a coordinated, multi-agency approach in the fight against narcotics.
Delivering the welcome address, the Head of Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU), CSP. Rev. Michael J.K. Laggah, underscored the Unit’s continued commitment to tackling transnational organised crime, particularly drug-related offences, which pose a serious threat to national security and public health.
Speaking on behalf of the Sierra Leone Police, ACP Brima Kamara, Esq., Head of Media, Public Relations and Sports, highlighted the core responsibilities of the police in the criminal justice process—from detection and apprehension to detention, investigation, and prosecution of offenders.
He emphasized that effective policing relies heavily on intelligence-led operations and strong collaboration among institutions.
ACP Kamara further noted that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Executive Management Board remain fully committed to supporting the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other partners in ensuring a sustained and successful fight against drug-related crimes.
Representatives from key institutions, including the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA), National Revenue Authority (NRA), Judiciary of Sierra Leone, Pharmacy Board of Sierra Leone, and the Office of National Security (ONS), also made statements, reaffirming their collective resolve to strengthen inter-agency cooperation.
In his keynote address, the Executive Director of NDLEA, Mr. Andrew Jaya Kaikai, disclosed that the destroyed narcotics were valued at over two million United States dollars.
He commended the Head of TOCU, his deputy, and the entire team for their dedication and professionalism in combating drug trafficking.
Mr. Kaikai stressed that the fight against narcotics is not the responsibility of one institution alone, urging all citizens and stakeholders to join forces in addressing the growing menace.
The event climaxed with the destruction of the seized narcotics through incineration at the TOCU Headquarters pit, followed by the official signing of the Certificate of Destruction.
The exercise serves as a clear demonstration of the government’s unwavering stance against illegal drugs and its commitment to safeguarding communities across Sierra Leone.
