Freetown, Sierra Leone — The Zero Corruption Campaign (ZCC.SL) has urged the Inspector General of the Sierra Leone Police to investigate allegations of bribery involving traffic police officers.
According to the organization, officers at various locations have been reportedly collecting bribes from commercial drivers, which threatens the integrity of the police force and the nation’s security.
ZCC.SL has pinpointed several key locations where these corrupt practices are said to be prevalent, including Regent, Mile 38, Jui Junction, Shell, Tikonkon Junction, and the last checkpoint before entering Makeni.
“The police should be a force for good, dedicated to upholding the law and ensuring public safety,” ZCC.SL stated. “These allegations of bribery, if true, undermine public trust and the rule of law.”
The organization stresses the importance of police officers serving as “trustworthy figures in their communities” and calls for swift action.
“By addressing these allegations, the Sierra Leone Police can take a significant step towards restoring public confidence and reinforcing their commitment to eradicating corruption,” they added.
ZCC.SL’s appeal is unequivocal: “Corruption must be eliminated.” The organization urges the Inspector General to conduct thorough investigations and take appropriate action against any officers found guilty of bribery. This, they believe, is crucial to fostering a culture of integrity within the police force.
“Confronting these issues head-on is vital for Sierra Leone’s progress towards a transparent and accountable society,” the statement concluded, reinforcing the message that corruption in any form will not be tolerated.
