Yenga, Sierra Leone – The Sierra Leone Army has bolstered its presence in Sukuba Village near Yenga with a significant deployment of troops and military hardware, following rising tensions at the border with Guinea.
According to credible sources, the military reinforcement comes in the wake of a recent confrontation between Sierra Leonean and Guinean forces.
Reports indicate that Guinean soldiers stationed across the border attempted to dislodge Sierra Leonean troops from their long-standing position in Sukuba. However, the Sierra Leonean forces stood their ground and successfully repelled the effort.
In a show of apparent frustration, the Guinean troops allegedly fired shots into the air and shouted aggressively upon returning to their base, sparking panic among local residents. This led to a mass movement of civilians from Yenga and surrounding communities to nearby Koindu town for safety.
Diplomatic channels are currently being engaged to address the situation and seek a peaceful resolution. However, efforts may be delayed as Guinea’s Head of State, Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya, is reportedly out of the country.
The Yenga border area has long been a point of contention between the two West African nations, with past agreements calling for mutual dialogue and cooperation.
