FREETOWN – The Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA) has responded to a fire incident that occurred at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay ‘Water Quay ‘ on Tuesday afternoon, assuring port users and the public that the situation is under control.
In a Public Notice dated 6th October 2026, SLPHA Management said the fire broke out around 2:00 PM at the Buffer Zone of the Port and engulfed a container haulage truck carrying a forty-foot container.
The incident caused thick smoke and brief panic among workers and drivers operating within the Queen Elizabeth II Quay at Cline Town, Sierra Leone’s main commercial seaport.
According to the Authority, the SLPHA Port Fire team, in collaboration with other port stakeholders, responded promptly and successfully extinguished the blaze.
SLPHA confirmed that there were no casualties, the container involved remains intact, and the fire was effectively contained and did not escalate to other trucks or nearby containers.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. However, SLPHA says relevant teams are assessing the incident and have taken the necessary safety and operational measures following the emergency response.
The Authority assured port users, stakeholders and the general public that safety and security remain a priority at the port, and that normal operations have resumed.
“Further information will be provided as appropriate,” SLPHA stated.
