In the wake of the shocking murder of Lebanese businessman Salim Dayeck on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at his residence on No. 26 Hanga Road, Kenema, police authorities have provided an update on their investigation into the tragic incident.
Speaking to the Global Times this week, Sub-Inspector Vandy James Musa, Deputy Communications Officer for the Kenema Police Division, confirmed that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is conducting a comprehensive investigation into the killing. The businessman was reportedly murdered in cold blood at his home, sparking widespread shock in the community.
Sub-Inspector Musa disclosed that the police have arrested 20 individuals in connection with the murder, including the prime suspect, Umaru Sama. Of those detained, 16 are men and 4 women, all of whom remain in custody to assist the police in their ongoing inquiries.
A postmortem examination conducted by Senior Government Pathologist Dr. Simeon Owizz Koroma at the Kenema Government Hospital revealed that Salim Dayeck died from excessive bleeding and multiple stab wounds inflicted by his attackers. Representatives from the police, the Lebanese community, and other stakeholders were present during the autopsy.
Musa further reported that the prime suspect was apprehended at the scene with a knife, scissors, and bloodstained socks while allegedly attempting to open the shop of the deceased. The discovery was made by another Lebanese businessman, Kamal Mansour, believed to be a neighbor of the victim. The police also possess surveillance footage showing suspects entering the residence of the late Dayeck on the day of the murder.
“Following an identification parade, it is clear that the suspects in custody have a case to answer,” Musa stated, expressing confidence that the investigation will lead to further arrests and interrogations.
In a brief statement, Amin Skaikey, Chairman of the Lebanese Community in Kenema, said they were devastated by the news, especially considering the victim had been dealing with significant health issues prior to his death. He confirmed that the community facilitated the postmortem and that the deceased had been laid to rest in Kenema. A report has also been sent to the Lebanese Embassy in Freetown, and they are awaiting the results of the ongoing investigation.
The police have assured the public that the investigation will continue until all those responsible are brought to justice.
