Freetown, March 28, 2025 – The Government of Sierra Leone has declared Monday, March 31, 2025, a public holiday in observance of Eid-ul-Fitr, the Islamic festival marking the end of Ramadan.
According to an official statement from State House, the holiday follows the Eid celebration, which falls on Sunday, March 30, 2025.

Eid-ul-Fitr, also known as the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” is one of the most significant religious occasions for Muslims worldwide. It marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, a period of fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection.
In Sierra Leone, where Islam is widely practiced, Eid celebrations are characterized by communal prayers at mosques and open fields, festive meals, and acts of charity, particularly towards the less fortunate.
Traditionally, the day begins with special prayers known as the Salat al-Eid, followed by family gatherings and the exchange of greetings such as “Eid Mubarak”. Many Sierra Leoneans also observe the custom of giving Zakat al-Fitr, a charitable donation to support those in need.
The public holiday declaration ensures that citizens can fully participate in the festivities, which promote unity, gratitude, and generosity.
As families and communities prepare to mark the occasion, the government has extended best wishes to all Muslims celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr across the country.
