Freetown, August 21, 2026 — Hundreds of contract workers at the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) across Sierra Leone can finally breathe a sigh of relief.
On Friday, Honourable Minister of Energy Cyril Arnold Grant announced the permanent absorption of 50% of EDSA’s contract staff nationwide. The decision, made at the Ministry of Energy conference room in Freetown, fulfils a promise the Minister made when he took office.
The move covers every department and every region, from technical crews in the field to customer service and administrative staff. Many of these workers have served EDSA for years without job security.
Minister Grant told the staff that their work sits at the heart of national development.
“Energy is the backbone of His Excellency President Bio’s service delivery mantra,” he said. “Without electricity, there is no progress. And without you, there is no electricity. That is why I made this promise, and that is why I am here today to fulfil it.”
He urged the newly absorbed workers to approach their duties with greater diligence, professionalism and pride in serving the people of Sierra Leone.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Denis Ivan Johnson of the Distribution, Technical and Service Department expressed deep gratitude.
“We have served this institution for a long time,” Mr. Johnson said. “Today we feel seen, we feel valued, and we promise to give back with even more commitment.”
The decision is expected to boost staff morale, reduce turnover and improve electricity service delivery across the country. It forms part of wider reforms in the energy sector, which remains closely linked to the government’s Feed Salone agenda.
With this action, Minister Grant has kept his word and sent a clear message: the men and women who keep the lights on deserve dignity, stability and respect.
