The government of Sierra Leone has completed the construction of 50 modern boats across the country’s seven coastal districts, a significant milestone in fostering local employment and community empowerment.
The project, which engaged prominent local companies, saw Debia Construction spearheading efforts in Kambia, Lacoste Engineering in Port Loko, R. Jordan Logistics in Bonthe, and Marathon Max Ltd operating in Pujehun and Moyamba districts. Yangs Construction led the initiative in Western Urban, while Kadeen Construction handled operations in Western Rural.
Designed to benefit 1,000 youth, the boats will be managed by groups of 20, forming cooperatives to promote sustainable livelihoods. The project involved extensive consultations with stakeholders and community members, ensuring local supervision and fostering a sense of ownership.
“This initiative is a game-changer for the fishing industry, creating opportunities for young people while boosting the local economy,” said a statement from the Ministry of Youth Affairs.
The project aligns with the government’s vision of enhancing economic development in coastal regions while strengthening community ties. It was supported by partnerships with organizations like UNDP, UNICEF, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.
This achievement underscores Sierra Leone’s commitment to sustainable development and youth empowerment.
