Freetown – The Ministry of Transport and Aviation has announced a 12.5 percent increase in sea transportation fares for ferries operating between Freetown and Lungi, effective Tuesday, 8 September 2026.
The adjustment follows the recent public announcement of an increase in the pump price of fuel. In a press release signed by Deputy Minister Hon. Rex Bhonapha, the Ministry stated that it reached the agreement in collaboration with ferry operators.
Under the new rates, calculated on the basis of fuel at NLe 45 per litre, passengers and vehicle owners will pay the following:
– First Class Tickets: from NLe 67.7 to NLe 76.2
– Second Class Ticket: from NLe 36.7 to NLe 41.3
– Van/Jeep: from NLe 294.8 to NLe 331.7
– Cars: from NLe 245.2 to NLe 275.9
– Coach Below 25 Seats: from NLe 310.5 to NLe 349.3
– Coach Between 25 and 40 Seats: from NLe 391.3 to NLe 440.2
– Coach 42 Seats: from NLe 506.1 to NLe 569.4
– Coach Above 42 Seats: from NLe 782.8 to NLe 880.7
– Motor Bike: from NLe 69.3 to NLe 78.0
– Bus (e.g. TATA): from NLe 1,284.8 to NLe 1,445.4
– Bicycles: from NLe 37.6 to NLe 42.3
– Tricycle (Keke): from NLe 200.2 to NLe 225.2
– Forces (GoSL): from NLe 13.5 to NLe 15.2
Students in uniform continue to travel free of charge. Fares for empty and full trucks, 20ft and 40ft trailers, and luggage remain negotiable.
The press release was endorsed by operators, including Mr. Sallah, General Manager of Afrimpex Navigation (SL) Ltd, and Alusine Daramy, Managing Director of M.V. Mahera.
The Ministry urged the travelling public to take note of the revised fares, which took effect on 8 September 2026.
