The Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces has announced plans to modernize its accommodation facilities, confirming that land has been secured in Masiaka for the construction of a new military housing complex intended to replace the aging Juba Barracks.
In a press release issued on February 23, 2026, from Defence Headquarters at Cockerill Barracks, military authorities said the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to improve troop welfare, operational readiness, and long-term efficiency. The planned development in Masiaka will provide modern, secure, and family-friendly housing for personnel, alongside improved training and support infrastructure.
According to the Armed Forces, only about 30 percent of its personnel currently live in official barracks, with many forced to stay in private or temporary accommodation due to limited capacity.
Officials noted that Juba Barracks consists of roughly 20 outdated buildings that no longer meet modern standards and offer little room for expansion due to increasing urban congestion.
To fund the Masiaka project, the military is reviewing options for the future of the Juba Barracks site, including a possible sale, lease, public-private partnership, or partial redevelopment. However, authorities emphasized that no final decision has been made, as all proposals are still undergoing legal, financial, and strategic assessment.
Defence officials said the goal is to transform underutilized assets into funding that will support improved living conditions and strengthen the Armed Forces’ operational capacity.
The statement, signed by Defence Spokesman Air Commodore Hassan Sei Coomber, assured the public that the process will remain transparent and that the final decision on Juba Barracks will be announced after consultations and evaluations are completed.
