Freetown, Sierra Leone – Dr. Ibrahim Bangura, a flagbearer aspirant for the All Peoples Congress (APC), has raised serious concerns regarding the recent detention of the party’s National Secretary General, Lansana Dumbuya, following his court appearance on February 12, 2026.
Dumbuya was denied bail and remanded to Pademba Road Prison after facing three charges linked to an alleged prior offense. The APC had previously been fined by the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) in connection with the same matter.
This development comes just days after Dumbuya was invited for questioning by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on February 5, 2026, where he was detained for a day before being released.
In a public statement issued on Friday, Dr. Bangura highlighted the need for tolerance, restraint, and the safeguarding of democratic principles amid growing worries about fairness in Sierra Leone’s political landscape.
“Peace and stability in our nation rely on tolerance, fairness, and strong democratic institutions,” Dr. Bangura stated. “Sierra Leone’s democracy must remain a space where political rights are protected, and justice is administered fairly and consistently.”
He urged authorities to apply bail provisions fairly and in accordance with legal and constitutional standards, while calling on APC members and supporters to stay united during this challenging period.
“This moment calls for reflection, restraint, and a renewed commitment to the democratic values that unite us as a nation,” Dr. Bangura added. “Sierra Leone’s progress depends on our collective dedication to justice, peace, and reconciliation.”
The detention has sparked discussions within political circles about the state of democratic freedoms in the country, though no official response from the government or judicial authorities has been issued at this time.
The APC, one of Sierra Leone’s major opposition parties, continues to navigate internal and external pressures ahead of upcoming elections.
