In a bid to enhance security and safeguard public spaces, the Freetown City Council (FCC) has initiated major construction projects at several key locations in the city.
Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr announced the commencement of these projects in a social media post, emphasizing the council’s commitment to protecting the final resting places of the city’s residents and improving the safety of municipal schools.
“To address the challenge of security and the protection of the final resting places of Freetonians, Freetown City Council has started major wall construction projects at the Ascension Town and Kissy Road cemeteries,” Mayor Aki-Sawyerr stated.
She revealed that on July 27, 2024, the FCC handed over project sites to contractors for the construction of a 126-meter perimeter wall and gate at Ascension Town Cemetery, as well as a 304-meter perimeter wall and gate at Kissy Road Cemetery.
In addition to these cemetery projects, the FCC has commenced the construction of a 210-meter perimeter wall and gate at Akibo-Bett Municipal School.
This initiative will also enhance the security of the Tower Hill Municipal Primary School, which shares the same grounds.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr highlighted the source of funding for these vital projects, noting that they are financed through the city’s own revenue, primarily collected from property rates and business licenses.
“This important construction work is funded by FCC’s own source revenue, principally mobilized through the payment by Freetonians of property rates and business licenses,” she said.
She also took the opportunity to thank the residents who have already contributed and urged others to fulfill their obligations.
“FCC would like to ensure that all cemeteries and municipal schools are fenced and protected, but we can only fund this and other critical work if Freetonians pay their property rates and business licenses!” Aki-Sawyerr concluded.
