On Thursday, August 8th, 2024, at the Albert Academy School located on Berry Street, Freetown, a significant milestone in the school’s storied history was marked with the official launch of the Albert Academy Pavement Project.
This initiative, scheduled for completion by the end of September 2024, represents a crucial step in the ongoing efforts to enhance the physical infrastructure and educational environment of one of Sierra Leone’s most prestigious secondary schools.
A Legacy of Excellence
Founded in 1904, the Albert Academy has long been a beacon of educational excellence in Sierra Leone. The school has produced some of the country’s most prominent leaders and intellectuals, including the first Prime Minister, Sir Milton Margai, and former President, Siaka Stevens. Its rich history of academic rigor and discipline has earned it a place of honor in the annals of Sierra Leonean education. For more than a century, the Albert Academy has been a crucible for producing distinguished graduates who have gone on to serve in various high-profile capacities both within the country and abroad.
The Launch of the Pavement Project
The launch of the pavement project was a momentous occasion, celebrated by the school’s administration, alumni, students, and well-wishers. The President of the Albert Academy Alumni Association, in his speech, emphasized the historical significance of the day. Reflecting on their tenure since assuming office in 2021, he recounted the challenge presented to them by Dr. Stevens, the current Bank Governor of Sierra Leone, during the school’s foundation day on October 4th, 2021. Dr. Stevens urged the alumni association to develop a comprehensive strategic plan that would guide the school’s development and ensure its continued relevance in the 21st century.
One of the key components of this strategic plan was the pavement of the school grounds, which had been identified as a critical need. However, the project extends beyond mere paving; it includes the construction of a multipurpose sports ground, underscoring the importance of physical education and holistic student development. The President also noted that they are exploring sustainable financial models to ensure the maintenance of the newly paved grounds once the project is completed.
The total cost of the project is estimated at 1 billion 629 million old Leones, of which 40 percent has already been paid. The President commended the Vice President of the Alumni Association, who also serves as the Co-chair of the 120th Anniversary Committee, for her tireless efforts in raising funds and driving the project forward. He also extended his gratitude to the various individuals, classes, and organizations that have contributed to the pavement project.
As part of his commitment to transparency, the President promised that a full account of the funds used for the project would be provided to the school community upon its completion.
Government and Community Support
In a show of solidarity, Mr. Conrad Sackey, the Minister of Basic and Senior Education and a representative of the school board, attended the launch. He expressed his delight at being part of this historic event, even though he had to rush from another engagement to be present. Recognizing the importance of the pavement project, he pledged his support and donated $1,000 in memory of a late friend, who was an academician and military officer.
Mr. Sackey emphasized the need for collective effort to restore the glory of the Albert Academy, urging all alumni, especially those in the diaspora, to contribute to the success of the project. He also revealed that plans are underway to transition the school to a single-shift system, which would improve educational outcomes and create better opportunities for teachers.
A Vision for Inclusivity
Cecilia Konah Koroma, speaking at the event, highlighted the importance of including women and girls in the Albert Academy. She shared her pride in being part of this historic institution and called for continued efforts to enhance the school’s reputation. She praised the Minister of Basic and Senior Education for his dedication to the school and emphasized the need for the Albert Academy to maintain its legacy as a school of excellence that has produced numerous dignitaries over the years.
Looking Ahead
The Principal of the Albert Academy Senior Secondary School, Mr. Vandy, welcomed all attendees and expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the pavement project. He highlighted the importance of a conducive learning environment in attracting more students to the school. However, he also noted that the school administration alone cannot shoulder the responsibility of maintaining the school’s standards and called for continued support from alumni and other stakeholders.
The event concluded with the singing of the school’s alma mater and the official launch of the project by Mr. Conrad Sackey. The Albert Academy Pavement Project is not just about improving the physical infrastructure; it is a symbol of the school’s commitment to preserving its legacy while adapting to the needs of the future.
As the project moves forward, the Albert Academy community is united in its resolve to ensure that the school continues to be a pillar of educational excellence in Sierra Leone, producing leaders who will contribute to the nation’s development for generations to come.
