Sierra Leone men national team, Leone Stars have suffered their first loss against the Pharaohs of Egypt in a riveting FIFA World Cup qualifier clash this Sunday at the Samuel K Doe Stadium in neighbouring Liberia.
The away side, Egypt triumphed over Sierra Leone who had two players sent off with a decisive 2-0 victory.
The opening half witnessed Egypt seizing the lead in the 18th minute, as Trezeguet found the net following a skillful backheel assist from Mostafa Mohamed. This unexpected goal disrupted Sierra Leone’s momentum, who had been posing a greater threat until that point.
Sierra Leone suffered a setback in the 39th minute when Tyrese Fornah was shown a red card for a reckless challenge on Hamdy Fathy, diminishing their hopes of staging a comeback.
Exploiting their numerical advantage in the second half, Egypt extended their lead in the 67th minute, with Salah scoring after setting up Trezeguet for a one-on-one opportunity, resulting in a deflected shot finding the back of the net.
Undeterred by being a player down, Sierra Leone persisted in their offensive efforts, but Egypt’s steadfast defense thwarted their attempts, culminating in a comfortable 2-0 victory for Egypt as the final whistle blew.
Young Sierra Leonean defender was sent off in the last minute of the match, after making a rash challenge on a Egyptian winger.
The defeat came after Sierra Leone drew 0-0 against Ethiopia last Wednesday. Sierra Leone will play their next match at home against Djibouti on 5 June 2024.
