Dorothy Kemokai, a charcoal seller based in Wellington, the eastern part of Freetown, has emerged as the winner with 1,452 votes and a total of 51%, making her the second winner of the Liz Allen Women Foundation project for the month of June, winning a sum of NLe 10,000 from Liz Allen.
Founded by Liz Allen, a Sierra Leonean woman based in the US, the foundation seeks to support vulnerable women in Sierra Leone who are in small businesses.
The Liz Allen Foundation’s Women Empowerment Lucky Winner project was launched last month, May, with Haja Barrie, a young lady in Kenema who won Le 5,000 and two bags of flowers.
Speaking to Liz Allen about this empowerment project, she noted, “I have been there; I know how it feels as a woman waking up knowing that you need to feed your child or children, especially for single mothers. I hope with this little support, we are able to put a smile on their faces. We rise by lifting others”
As part of the Liz Allen Foundation’s Women Empowerment Lucky Winner project, the foundation received hundreds of business ideas from women across the country through its Facebook page Chat and Chat with Liz.
Dorothy Komokai, charcoal seller, and Matina Augustine Taylor, a seamstress from the west, were selected for the voting process. After five days of voting on Facebook, Dorothy Komokai, the charcoal seller, won with 51%.
The winner was announced during a Facebook live by Mohamed King Millan Bangura, a popular television and radio entertainment producer and presenter at the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation Television.
