In a momentous announcement, Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi has declared a public holiday following the historic Olympic victory of 21-year-old sprinter Letsile Tebogo at the Paris 2024 Games.
Tebogo shocked the athletics world by defeating pre-race favorite Noah Lyles to claim the Olympic 200m title with a new African Record (AR) of 19.46 seconds.
Tebogo’s triumph marks a significant milestone, as he becomes the first African man to win an Olympic 200m title and the first to secure a gold medal for Botswana in the history of the Games.
The nation’s pride in this achievement was evident in President Masisi’s decision to honor Tebogo with a national celebration.
In a statement released on Friday, the Office of the President declared, “His Excellency, Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi, President of the Republic of Botswana, hereby declares to the nation, that he has found it a fitting tribute to Mr. Letsile Tebogo, ‘Botswana’s Sensation,’ to grant Batswana and residents an afternoon day-off, on this very day, Friday the 9th August, 2024.”
President Masisi emphasized the significance of Tebogo’s victory, stating that it “deserves to be etched in the records of Botswana’s history.”
The statement continued, “The decision has been duly made to recognize and honor Letsile Tebogo as the first Motswana and first African to win a Gold Medal for 200m in the history of the Olympics.”
The President also highlighted the importance of celebrating this achievement, noting that it is “markedly outstanding and deserving of the nation to pause and celebrate him in a most unique, appropriate, and responsible manner, that will be etched in the annals of the history of the Republic.”
This historic day will undoubtedly be remembered as a time when Botswana came together to celebrate one of its brightest stars on the world stage.
