MAKENI – The leadership of the Bombali District Council has paid a courtesy call on former President Ernest Bai Koroma at his residence in Makeni, days after his return to Sierra Leone following two years in Nigeria.
The delegation was led by Council Chairman, Dr. Mohamed Mark Babah Sisay, and included All People’s Congress (APC) Councillors of the district.
According to an official press release from the Council, the visit on Friday, 25th September 2026, was to formally welcome the former President back home and to brief him on the Council’s work during his absence.
Dr. Sisay presented a four-page progress report detailing strategic development initiatives, infrastructure milestones and community projects implemented by the Council over the past two years.
Receiving the delegation, former President Koroma expressed gratitude and commended the Council for its unity and focus on local governance.
“Bombali District Council stands as the most peaceful, cohesive, and results-driven council in the region,” H.E. Koroma was quoted as saying.
He urged Councillors to remain steadfast as frontline administrators of grassroots development and announced plans to pay an official return visit to the Council’s headquarters in the near future.
The visit comes amid renewed political attention on the former President, who left Sierra Leone for Nigeria in January 2024 on medical grounds after being charged in connection with the 26th November 2023 failed coup attempt – charges he has consistently denied. He had been under house arrest in Freetown before being allowed to travel by the High Court, with the approval of the Government and ECOWAS mediation.
His return to Makeni, his hometown and political base, has drawn visits from APC stalwarts and local authorities. Bombali District is regarded as the heartland of the APC and Mr. Koroma remains highly influential in the party.
Bombali District Council, currently under APC control, has in recent months highlighted road rehabilitation, market infrastructure, and revenue mobilization as key priorities, under the slogan “We Are Unique for a Reason — Let’s Make It Happen!”
