President Dr. Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone officially commissioned the ECOWAS Logistics Depot in Lungi, describing the facility as a strategic investment in preparedness, resilience, and collective security for the West African region.
The commissioning ceremony took place alongside the opening of the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre as part of activities tied to the ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit 2026, which Sierra Leone is hosting. President Bio was joined by First Lady Fatima Maada Bio and other high-level dignitaries.
ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray commended Sierra Leone for hosting the depot, noting that the facility was built to strengthen ECOWAS’ peace and security architecture and enhance its capacity to respond swiftly to humanitarian emergencies.
Speaking at the event, Touray highlighted the depot’s strategic importance amid evolving humanitarian and logistical challenges in the region. He also praised Sierra Leone’s geographical advantages.
“Its position on the Atlantic coast and experience in supporting international and regional peacekeeping and logistics operations, Sierra Leone provides a strategic location from which the facility can serve the entire community,” he said.
The depot comprises two main complementary components: administrative and maintenance facilities that will function as the primary logistics and operational hub, and a dedicated training facility for police, military, and humanitarian personnel from across Africa. Officials say it will significantly enhance ECOWAS’s capacity to support peace operations, deliver humanitarian assistance, and coordinate rapid emergency responses during crises.
In remarks at the event, President Bio, who also serves as the current Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, emphasized the depot’s role in strengthening regional stability. The project aligns with broader efforts to operationalize the ECOWAS Standby Force for peacekeeping, counterterrorism, and disaster response missions.
Background and Strategic Importance
Plans for the ECOWAS Logistics Depot in Lungi date back several years, with foundation-laying for later phases occurring in 2020. The facility, located near Sierra Leone’s main international airport, has been developed in multiple phases with strong advocacy from President Bio. It is designed to serve as a key forward-operating base for the region.
Lungi’s strategic location offers logistical advantages, including proximity to air and sea transport links, making it ideal for rapid deployment of personnel and supplies across West Africa. The depot is expected to support ECOWAS missions in addressing ongoing challenges such as political instability, terrorism in the Sahel, and humanitarian needs stemming from conflicts or natural disasters.
This development comes as ECOWAS continues institutional reforms and seeks to enhance its Standby Force capabilities. The Lungi facility represents a concrete step toward greater self-reliance in regional security architecture.
Vice President Dr. Juldeh Jalloh and other officials have hailed the project as a lasting legacy of President Bio’s leadership within ECOWAS, underscoring Sierra Leone’s commitment to regional integration and peace.
The new infrastructure is anticipated to host training exercises, coordination meetings, and operational planning for multinational forces, further solidifying Lungi’s role as an emerging hub for West African cooperation.
