Freetown, July 12, 2024 – The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mohamed Lamin Tarawally has stepped in to mediate the ongoing turmoil within the Sierra Leone Bar Association.
In a letter from the Attorney General’s office, the two main presidential candidates from the recent Bar elections, Augustine Sorie-Sengbe Marrah Esq. and Wara Serry-Kamal Esq., have been invited to a crucial meeting aimed at addressing the divisions plaguing the association.
It remains uncertain if the current President, Adama Tuma Gento-Kamara Esq., will participate in the meeting.
The recent Bar elections were fraught with controversy and allegations of irregularities. The Attorney General’s office stated that the meeting would discuss issues of mutual interest to the Bar Association, with the goal of resolving internal conflicts.
The mediation session was set for today, Friday, July 12, 2024.
This intervention follows an extraordinary general meeting called by association members, which took place outside the New Brookfield’s Hotel in Freetown after being denied entry by the Sierra Leone Police.
President Gento-Kamara has denounced the extraordinary meeting as illegal.
The Attorney General’s mediation aims to unite all factions, fostering dialogue to find a path forward for the association. It is hoped that this effort will restore unity and stability within the Bar Association.
