FREETOWN Sierra Leone — The Chief of Army Staff of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), Major General Kemoh Sesay, has lauded Sierra Leonean troops for what he described as exceptional professionalism and discipline during a recent border confrontation with Guinean forces in Kaliyereh.
Addressing journalists at a Ministry of Information and Civic Education press briefing held at the Miatta Conference Centre on Tuesday, 3rd March 2026, Major General Sesay outlined the circumstances surrounding the incident and defended the actions taken by the commanding officer on the ground.
He explained that the officer conducted a “battle appreciation” and made a strategic decision aimed at preventing the situation from spiraling into armed conflict between the two neighboring countries.
According to the Army Chief, although Sierra Leonean soldiers were reportedly surrounded and instructed to surrender their weapons, they deliberately chose not to open fire. Instead, they complied in a calculated move to de-escalate tensions and were subsequently escorted into Guinean territory without resistance.
Major General Sesay stressed that the decision required courage and restraint, noting that any exchange of gunfire could have triggered wider hostilities between the two nations.
Rejecting suggestions that the troops’ actions reflected weakness, he described their conduct as a clear demonstration of patriotism, discipline, and commitment to regional peace.
He emphasized the deep historical and cultural ties shared by Sierra Leone and Guinea, underscoring the importance of preserving stability.
The Army Chief also proposed a comprehensive joint boundary survey to address recurring border disputes.
He suggested that the exercise be undertaken collaboratively by both countries with the involvement of neutral regional bodies such as the Mano River Union, the ECOWAS, or the African Union.
He said the proposed survey should cover the entire stretch of the land boundary from Pamelap through Kambia, Falaba, Kono, and Kailahun districts to establish a clear and mutually recognized demarcation. Until such an exercise is completed, he cautioned against definitive territorial claims over contested areas.
Major General Sesay concluded by reaffirming the RSLAF’s commitment to defending Sierra Leone’s territorial integrity while upholding peaceful diplomatic relations with Guinea.
He commended the captain and troops involved for safeguarding national security and helping to preserve harmony between the two countries.
