Statement from the APC Publicity Secretariat on Saturday’s Fire Incident at State House
Monday, 14th April 2025
The fire that gutted State House on Saturday wasn’t just tragic, it was symbolic. It exposed the deep failures in Sierra Leone’s energy sector.
According to Fire Force, an electricity surge caused the blaze at State House, contrary to claims by the Energy, Chief, Kande Yumkella. State House burned by the very system it’s meant to oversee.
And it’s not just State House:
Makeni Children’s Ward—burned
building in Waterloo—burned with an Indian businessman inside.
Countless homes across Freetown and the provinces—burned
Electricity in Sierra Leone has become a weapon. Unstable voltage, no surge protection, and a government that’s totally out of touch.
Firefighters risk their lives daily with broken hoses, inadequate gear, no backup. Yet they show up. They’re the real heroes. SLPP claims to have spent or secured over $200 million for energy projects since 2018—CLSG, solar grids, MCC funds… Yet no stable light.
They abandoned APC-era programmes and competent personnel that were delivering, all in the name of partisanship. Now we’re all paying the price.
If State House can burn, who is safe? What message does that send about national security?
We need:
– Nationwide safety audits
– Swallow your ego and return to APC energy plans and programmes.
– Independent disaster response.
Time for leadership!
