FREETOWN, 7th October 2026 – Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Segehpoh Solomon Thomas, was absent from the Supreme Court today as Justices began hearing the challenge to the disputed passage of the Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2025.
His lawyer, Hon. Hindolo Gevao Esq., told the Court that the Speaker could not attend because he is down with diarrhoea and is absent on medical grounds.
The Speaker is a key defendant in the matter and is the very person who presided over Parliament on 10th August 2026 when the controversial Amendment Bill was purportedly passed.
The Supreme Court is hearing the case brought by two lawyers, Thomas Moore Conteh Esq. and Tamba Kellie Esq., who are asking the Court to declare that Parliament did not meet the two-thirds majority required under Section 108(2)(b) of the 1991 Constitution to amend the Constitution.
Despite the Speaker’s absence, the Court is proceeding with preliminary applications, including a move by the Attorney-General to consolidate all related cases into one.
Hearing continues at the Supreme Court.
