Guinea Restricts Some Sierra Leonean Travellers from Departing Conakry Airport

Guinean authorities have reportedly instructed officials at Ahmed Sékou Touré International Airport in Conakry to stop certain Sierra Leonean travellers they classify as irregular migrants from departing the country.

The move is part of efforts to tackle illegal migration and human trafficking.

The directive, according to recent reports circulating in Sierra Leonean media, targets people whose travel status or documentation raises concerns among Guinean airport and border officials. It forms part of broader measures to tighten controls at Guinea’s international entry and exit points. Specific categories of travellers affected, the exact criteria used, and how long the restrictions will last remain unclear.

Many Sierra Leoneans have long used Conakry as a cheaper alternative to Freetown’s Lungi International Airport for international flights. Popular Sierra Leonean rapper Natasha Beckley highlighted the issue on her Facebook page on 19 August 2026, describing the development as “heartbreaking.” She said her agent informed her that Sierra Leoneans could no longer depart from Conakry and noted that one of her contestants due to travel to Sri Lanka faced higher costs as a result, citing ticket prices of about $1,100 from Conakry versus $1,850 from Freetown.

This comes against a backdrop of earlier Guinean operations targeting undocumented foreigners. In March 2026, Guinean authorities conducted clearance exercises in Conakry (including the Boulbinet port area), leading to the assisted return of 942 Sierra Leoneans, adults and children, received at the Kambia border. Those with valid documents were released, while those without legal status were returned. Similar actions occurred in late 2024. Sierra Leonean authorities, via the embassy in Conakry, engaged counterparts to ensure orderly and dignified processes.

Relations between the two neighbours have seen both friction and progress. The Yenga border crossing, closed since April 2025, reopened in late June 2026 after diplomatic and military-level engagements, restoring trade and movement with agreements on notice for any future closures.

Travellers are advised to ensure all documentation is in order and to check the latest official guidance from both Sierra Leonean and Guinean authorities or their embassy/consulate before planning journeys via Conakry.

Further official clarification on the reported airport measures is still awaited.
