The All People’s Congress (APC) Internal Elections Management Committee (IEMC) has reported the successful and largely peaceful conduct of the party’s nationwide constituency-level elections, held on Saturday, 25 July 2026, across unaffected constituencies.
In a post-election statement issued in Freetown on 26 July, the IEMC said party members, candidates, delegates, observers and other stakeholders participated in a calm and orderly process. Delegates exercised their democratic rights without major disruption, and the committee praised candidates, party officials, election staff, security personnel and observers for their cooperation in upholding peace and order.
The IEMC noted that counting, verification, documentation and official declaration of results would follow the party’s established procedures. Legitimate complaints and petitions will be handled through the APC’s internal mechanisms. Members were urged to remain calm, respect officially declared outcomes, and uphold the party’s values of unity, discipline, tolerance and respect for internal democracy.
The constituency polls form a key stage in the APC’s internal democratisation process. Earlier lower-level (ward) elections in February 2026 filled more than 4,000 positions across 446 wards, though some logistical challenges and disputes later led to petitions and ordered re-runs.
Constituency elections themselves were postponed multiple times—from an initial late-June date, to 4 July, then to 11 July—following consultations with the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) to address administrative issues, mourning periods after the deaths of senior party figures, and the need for greater transparency.
In mid-July the IEMC, acting on PPRC directives, declared unopposed candidates duly elected without balloting in positions where only one nominee stood. The party has also scheduled re-run ward elections for 29 July 2026 in outstanding disputed areas still under review by the PPRC or the Independent Elections Complaints Body.
Reacting to the outcome, Freetown Mayor and APC figure Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr congratulated all comrades elected to various positions nationwide.
She encouraged those who did not secure posts to treat the result as a call to unity and collective effort toward regaining power in 2028. Aki-Sawyerr expressed gratitude to APC leadership and the IEMC for the peaceful conduct of the polls and thanked her supporters across the country for their commitment to the shared vision of transforming “Hope to Reality” in 2028.
The IEMC reaffirmed its dedication to credible, inclusive and accountable internal elections that strengthen democracy and cohesion within the APC as the party prepares for the next stages of its organisational renewal ahead of the 2028 general elections.
