The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mohamed Lamin Tarawallie Esq., has on Thursday, 18 April 2024 in the Chamber of Sierra Leone Parliament tabled a proclamation made Julius Maada Bio, President of the Republic, Supreme Head of State, Grand Commander of the Order of the Republic, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Fountain Head of Unity, Honour, Freedom, and Justice regarding Constitutional Instrument No.6 of 2024, relating to Kush and other harmful drugs.
The following documents were laid by the Attorney General and Minister of Justice:
1. Proclamation 2024 by His Excellency Brigadier Retired, Julius Maada Bio, President of the Republic, Supreme Head of State, Grand Commander of the Order of the Republic, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Fountain Head of Unity, Honour, Freedom and Justice
2. The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, The Public Emergency Regulations, 2024
The Drug and Substance Abuse Public Emergency Response Regulation 2024 And
The Statutory Instrument No.7 of 2024.
In his submission, Majority Leader and Leader of Government, Hon Mathew Sahr Nyuma said the papers that are laid on the table in the Chamber of the House had fulfilled all Legal procedures on the President Proclamation and commended the AG for adhering to the advice of Parliament.
The Acting Leader of Opposition, Hon.Daniel Koroma said the proclamation before the House is now in place and welcomed the conduct of the AG in adhering to the advice of Parliament .”Let me inform the general public that this proclamation is a new one before the House and the previous proclamation published on the 9th has elapsed and emphasized that this new one was gazetted on the 17/04/2024,” he said.
In another development, the Parliament of Sierra Leone, on Thursday 18/04/2024 extensively debated the Bill entitled: ‘The Criminal Procedure Act, 2024’ and committed it to the Legislative Committee for further amendments and scrutiny.
The Bill seeks to provide for the Repeal and Replace the Criminal Procedure Act, of 1965, to provide for new procedures relating to Summary trials, Committal Proceedings, trials on indictments, alternative Sentences, and other related matters.
Members of Parliament including both Leaders of Opposition and Government Business made comprehensive and meaningful contributions to the document, in light of concerns and questions, before committal to the Legislative Committee.
The Attorney General and Minister responded to issues, concerns, and questions earlier raised by MPs and also clarified.
